Con Watch: Animethon 23
The time of year when anime fans and cosplayers unite to make downtown Edmonton residents uncomfortable is nigh. MacEwan’s green pastures await. All of the Pokemon WILL be caught.
Back for its 23rd year, Animethon offers guests a whole slew of events, fan panels, special guests, and anime-related goodies. For three days, the convention will be taking over the downtown MacEwan campus and filling the grounds with the quirkiest, most passionate group of people you’ll ever meet. Join us for a weekend of excitement on August 5-7, pick up some collectibles, meet some celebrities, and maybe even catch your first (or tenth) Pikachu.
Event highlights this year include multiple cosplay contests, multiple Anime Music Video events, several dances, the Maid Cafe, a Lolita Fashion Show, the Mystery Masquerade Ball, and so much more. Pay attention, now, because there’s a few of them this time around:
- The original Cosplay Contest – Saturday Aug 6, 2:30pm – 5:00pm
- Craftsmanship Contest – Sunday Aug 7, 10:00am – 1:30pm
- Crossplay Pageant – Saturday Aug 6, 2:30pm – 5:00pm
- AMV Contest – Friday Aug 5, 6:00pm – 8:00pm
- Lolita Fashion Show – Saturday Aug 6, 12:00pm – 2:00pm
- Mystery Masqurade Ball – Thursday Aug 4, 8:30pm – 11:00pm
- Maid Cafe – Saturday Aug 6 ONLY, sessions from 11:00am – 7:00pm
Registration and check-in information can be found on the Animethon website. Just remember that attendees won’t be able to enter both the Cosplay Contest and the Crossplay Pageant, since they’re held at the same time.
Special guests this year are singer, model, actress, and author AKIRA, voice actor Bryce Papenbrook (Attack on Titan, Sword Art Online), Ladybeard, musical guest Another Story, voice actress Caitlin Glass (Fullmetal Alchemist, Attack on Titan), voice actor Eric Vale (Dragon Ball Z, One Piece), cosplayer Misa Chiang, rap artist Lotus Juice, the 404s, and the Orbis Symphony Orchestra.
Tickets can be purchased online until July 31st at $45 for a weekend pass, or at the event at $55 for a weekend pass, $35 for Friday or Saturday day passes, and $25 for a Sunday day pass. All children under 12 and accompanied by a paying guest get free admission. More ticket information can be found here.
Whether you’re in the market for some new Sailor Moon swag, want to catch a panel on Game of Thrones, or simply want to wander around the grounds in cosplay playing Pokemon Go (and trust me, you WON’T be alone on that one), there’s something for everyone at this year’s Animethon.
