Con Watch: Eek Fest 2016

The St. Albert comic convention is back for its third year in a row on June 4 and 5, with a few changes in the works. Eek Fest 2016 will again be held at Servus Credit Union Place on Campbell Road in St. Albert, with four halls filled with pop culture vendors, cosplayers, the Northern Bricks Lego exhibit, a zombie shooting range, and more.

The family-friendly event will also host a video game and tabletop gaming area alongside a number of tournaments, a life-sized Angry Birds-inspired catapult game (with double air cannons this year), and more than 15,000 square feet of LEGO, LEGO, and more LEGO, thanks to the Northern Alberta LEGO® Users Group (NALUG).

New this year are activities such as the Drone Zone, where you can fly your very own drone, and the Spidey Zip Line–an 85 foot long zip line ride. The main stage will host live performances by comedy troupe Rapid Fire Theatre, Geek Movie Improv, and KidInprov on the Sunday. Guests can also make their own puppet station with the folks from Odd-Lot Puppetry.

While Eek Fest has hosted celebrity guests in the past, with Stephen Amell attending in 2014 and Adrian Pasdar and Caity Lotz attending in 2015, this year’s show is taking a different direction from the standard convention formula.

“We’re investing our time and resources into new activities and games and stage shows and think year three is going to be great,” says Eek Fest founder Rob Lelacheur. “While we do love having guests and offering that aspect to our attendees, Eek Fest has always primarily been about activities and family-friendly fun, so we’re excited to place our focus in that direction this year.”

Of course, the convention will be bringing back its Costume Contest, with the adult contest being held on the Saturday and the children’s contest on the Sunday. Both contests this year will see a return of the cosplay guests and judges from 2015: Natasha May Cosplay, Miss Chezza Cosplay, and Allison Lynn “Kitnip.” Contest registration can be done online here or at the cosplay judges’ booth on-site at Eek Fest.

There will also be a variety of “geek-related” groups in attendance to cover the show and interview cosplayers and event attendees, so keep an eye out for our friends from the Northern Nerd Network to chat with them about Eek!

Guests can also get their shopping in with vendors such as Just Be Cos Cosplay & Craft Supplies, Nitro Geek, Octopug, Kaytlyne Pop Culture Artist, Clobberin’ Time Comics, and more.

Tickets are currently on sale at $19.99 for an adult weekend pass, $8 for children aged 6-12, or $39.99 for a family weekend pass (includes two adults and three youth). Day passes will be sold at the door, but all other tickets can be purchased online here.

More information can be found on the Eek Fest website.
