Event Preview: Animethon 22

Edmonton’s favourite celebration of Japanese culture is back for its twenty-second year. From August 7th to 9th, Animethon will take over MacEwan University’s downtown campus with anime-related merchandise, fan panels, celebrity guests, and so much more.

Last year’s event saw almost 9,000 attendees over three days—almost double the attendance from five years ago.

This year, Animethon will be hosting musical guests FLOW, as well as the following voice actors, comedians, and cosplayers:

  • Josh Grelle (Attack on Titan)
  • Christine Marie Cabanos (Sword Art Online, Kill la Kill)
  • Sarah Williams (League of Legends, Kill la Kill, Sword Art Online)
  • Carrie Keranen (Kill la Kill, Madoka Magica)
  • Brendan Hunter (Hunter x Hunter, Dragon Ball)
  • Jamie Marchi (Soul Eater)
  • Brina Palencia (Black Butler, Evangelion, One Piece, Borderlands)
  • The 404s (Canadian comedy improv group)
  • Liui Aquino (Cosplay guest)

Animethon 22 will also feature a cosplay contest, maid café, anime music video (AMV) contest, a Hall of Gaming, and the Star☆Light Masquerade Ball on the Thursday evening.

In anticipation of the event, we chatted with cosplayers and anime-lovers in and around Edmonton to see why they go to cons like Animethon and what they’re most looking forward to in the con’s twenty-second year. See their responses below:

Pre-registration for event passes closes on July 31st. Online tickets for Animethon 22 can be purchased here. Weekend and daily passes can also be purchased at the door.
